Bayern Munich‘s hunt for the UEFA Champions League still goes on. The Bundesliga champions strengthen their team every season to achieve this goal. Harry Kane was their biggest signing of the summer, and the German side hopes to achieve glory with him. There was another big signing that the team made, and he is Min-jae Kim. The South Korean defender played a huge part in Napoli’s Serie A success last season.

After winning the Scudetto in his debut season in Italy, the 26-year-old centre-back attracted a lot of attention across Europe. Bayern Munich landed him, and here is a look at how the player has settled and what he can add to his champion side.

Defensive wall

Kim was solid at the back for Napoli in Serie A in 2022–23 and the UEFA Champions League. Averaging 4.7 defensive duels, 4.7 aerial duels, and 2.6 loose ball duels per 90 minutes, the player won 72%, 60%, and 63% of these duels, respectively. This is a very high duel success rate. Kim also made more than five interceptions per 90 minutes and gave away fouls outside danger zones.

The defender is not afraid to put his body on the line. Min-jae Kim blocked 34 shots in the 2022–23 season, with most coming on the edge of the penalty box. Bayern Munich needs the same dedication in big games from their South Korean defensive wall.

Ball playing ability

Modern-day defenders should have the skill to play the ball. Otherwise, big teams won’t opt to buy the player in the transfer window. Averaging 71 passes per 90 minutes in 2022–23, the player had a high accuracy rate of 92.4%. These included 7.3 passes to the final third, and that too with a high accuracy rate of 80%. Kim distributed the ball to both flanks and often tried to find a teammate inside the opposition penalty box. He provided two assists.

Fight for a regular spot

Kim has to fight with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano for a regular spot. These three defenders are world-class, and here is how all three were ranked in the previous campaign.

Kim and Dutch defender De Ligt had a lot of things in common. The Dutch defender edged past his South Korean teammate on most occasions. Kim was better when it came to defensive duels and ball progression. Overall, both players have similar gameplay.

When it comes to comparison with Upamecano, the South Korean defender has been completely overshadowed in the passing stats. The French defender is a better player with the ball at his feet. He is not that strong aerially.

Bayern Munich have a solid defensive line this campaign. They have three top-class centre-backs, and all of them have similar abilities. The defence will look to remain in solid shape, and Bayern will look to earn the Champions League.
